Why is my internet so slow? Do the math—the Megamath!

Natalie Fleeman By Natalie Fleeman on 9/8/15 2:30 PM

There are three main factors that determine how “fast” or “slow” your Internet works:

  1. How many devices you have in your household.
  2. What kind of activities those devices are doing (video stream, games, music, etc.)
  3. How many megabits per second your Internet speed delivers (15 Mbps, 30 Mbps, 50 Mbps, 100 Mbps)

If you're streaming from several devices (the average household has 7  according to Strategy Analytics) with a relatively small/slow Internet connection (say 8 Megs), your Internet will drag if several people are doing things online at the same time.

This infographic helps demonstrate how to calculate the right speed for your home or business, plus also provides a basic understanding of the fundamentals that affect Internet performance.
